Disney movies are touchstones for many generations and cultures, and when you stop and think about it, they have a lot to say about water… Moana embarks on an epic journey across the ocean to save her people; Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen navigate the Bayou of New Orleans; water plays a huge role in Elsa’s power, family memory, and the saving of Arendelle; and, of course, Ariel’s story serves as an introduction to many of the beauty of the ocean, as well as the meaning of home.

It’s easy to see how these characters – Ariel, Moana, Tiana, Lilo, and many more – would find their homes in danger if they lived in the real world. Coral reefs are disappearing, disastrous hurricanes are becoming more common, and communities all over the world are lacking clean, safe, drinking water.  And because of systemic racism, we know that BIPOC communities are most impacted by the climate crisis. We know climate change is a part of our world, but the good news is that we can do something about it together!

The upcoming release of the live-action Little Mermaid movie inspired us to develop Protect Ariel’s Home. Throughout April, May, and June, we’re going to be working with some awesome orgs and activists – including Alastair Lee Bitsóí, Western Water Girl, and GreenLatinos – to take action to keep whosits and whatsits galore out of our waters.

TRAIN TO PROTECT ARIEL’S HOME

Water is essential to life. No living thing can survive without it. And yet, tons of communities across the globe lack access to clean drinking water. There is so much work to be done that it can be hard to know where to start! Luckily, Fandom Forward is here to help — join us for one of the three trainings listed below to learn directly from our on-the-ground partners working to protect water access!

Sat, April 22, 2pm ET Protect Ariel’s Home: Launch! | LINK

At this launch event for Protect Ariel’s Home, learn about the water crisis from our friends at Indigenous Earth Protectors, clean water educator Western Water Girl, and many more! We’ll use what we learn as a foundation for the rest of our campaign!

Thurs, May 18, 8pm ET Protect Ariel’s Home: Take Action! | LINK

We’re continuing our training during this second event of the campaign, featuring a representative from GreenLatinos and other climate activists and Disney fan creators! We’ll be learning more about GreenLatinos and their work envisioning a healthy and equitable society where communities of color are liberated from disproportionate environmental burdens and, most importantly, we’ll be learning how to take action to support their work!

Thurs, June 1, 8pm ET Protect the Water, Protect the Mermaids | LINK

IT’S PRIDE MONTH!!! In June, we’re launching a very special fundraiser: Protect the Water, Protect the Mermaids. In the spirit of valuing the importance of intersectionality in our work, all proceeds from this fundraiser will be split between Fandom Forward and Mermaids (in support of their work to protect trans folks in the UK).

Wed, June 14, 8pm ET Our Flag Means Queer Rights | LINK

We’re back again! Last year, we had SO MUCH FUN hosting Our Flag Means Queer Rights that we just had to do it again! Join us on Flag Day for a very special action livestream in which we’ll be raising funds for our Protect the Water, Protect the Mermaids fundraiser, learning about the intersections between queer issues and climate issues, as well as taking action to combat anti-trans legislation in the United States.

TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT ARIEL’S HOME

Once you’ve gone through one of our trainings, it’s time to visit Ariel’s Action Grotto! In this spreadsheet, you’ll find all the specific ways you can do something meaningful to protect Ariel’s home (AKA the ocean and all water connected to it) during this campaign. We’ll be adding actions throughout the campaign, so make sure to make multiple visits!
